Customer Acquisition Cost Calculator

Blended CAC from total acquisition spend and new customers acquired.

What CAC includes

Everything spent to win a customer: ad spend, agency fees, affiliate commissions, the salaries of people working on acquisition, and the tools that support them. Excluding salaries is the most common way CAC gets understated.

CAC only means something against LTV

A 50 CAC is excellent if lifetime value is 300 and disastrous if it is 60. The rule of thumb is at least 3:1 LTV to CAC; below 1:1 you are paying to lose money. Use the LTV calculator with this one.

Reducing CAC without cutting reach

  • Improve conversion rate — same spend, more customers
  • Shift budget to retention and referral, which lower blended CAC
  • Fix the worst-performing channel rather than trimming all of them
  • Track payback period: months until CAC is recovered

The payback question

If CAC is 50 and monthly gross profit per customer is 10, payback is five months. Businesses with cash constraints should optimise payback, not lifetime ratio — you cannot spend a ratio.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should CAC include organic traffic costs?

Content and SEO salaries yes; purely organic customers still cost money to acquire.

What is a good CAC?

It depends on LTV and payback; 3:1 LTV:CAC with sub-12-month payback is a solid target.

Does CAC change with scale?

Usually it rises as you exhaust cheap channels — plan for it rather than being surprised.
