How parcel pricing works
Carriers price on billable weight (the greater of actual and dimensional) and zone (distance band). Base rate covers the first pound and handling; per-pound rates add above that; a fuel surcharge — usually 10–18% — is applied to the total and changes weekly.
Zone is the hidden multiplier
Shipping the same 3 lb box from Los Angeles to Seattle (zone 2) versus New York (zone 8) can differ by 60–100%. If your customers cluster in one region, your effective shipping cost is far below the national average — and your free-shipping threshold should reflect that.
Reducing shipping cost without cheaping out
- Cut dimensional weight: right-size boxes, reduce void fill
- Negotiate once volume crosses a few hundred parcels a month
- Use regional carriers for short zones; national ones for long
- Offer a pickup point or slower tier at checkout
What this estimate excludes
Residential surcharges, address corrections, oversize fees and peak-season surcharges. Add them from your carrier invoice to get a true delivered cost — those line items routinely add 8–15%.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a shipping zone?
A distance band from origin to destination; zone 1 is local, zone 8 crosses the country.
Why is my actual rate higher?
Surcharges: residential delivery, fuel, oversize and peak fees are added on top of the published rate.
Does weight or size matter more?
For dense items weight dominates; for bulky light items dimensional weight does.
