Package Size Estimator

Recommended box dimensions from product size plus cushioning, with volume and DIM weight.

Why box size is a margin decision

Packaging affects three costs at once: the box itself, the void fill, and — most importantly — dimensional weight. A box an inch too large in every dimension can add 15–20% to shipping on every order, forever.

The cushioning rule

Two inches of protection per side is the standard for fragile goods; one inch for durable items. The calculator adds your cushion value to each dimension and reports the resulting volume, DIM weight and the closest standard box size.

What to watch

  • Custom mailers often beat standard boxes for hero products
  • Poly mailers avoid DIM weight entirely for soft goods
  • Right-sizing reduces damage claims as well as freight
  • Test one SKU before ordering 5,000 boxes

The sustainability angle

Smaller boxes mean less fill, fewer trucks and a better unboxing experience. It is one of the few changes that improves cost, carbon and reviews simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much cushioning do I need?

One inch per side for durable goods, two for fragile; heavy items need corner protection regardless.

Can I ship in a poly mailer?

For soft, non-fragile goods yes — and it usually avoids dimensional weight entirely.

How do I find the closest standard box?

The tool suggests the nearest cube size; real suppliers list dimensions like 10×8×6 which may fit better.
